Having a voice over demo is one of the first steps you must take to becoming a voice actor. You have made the decision to become a voice over actor, you’ve learned as much as you can, now it’s time to earn from what you’ve learned. But you’re stuck because you don’t have samples.
“To make a great voice over demo, you need to know what it is, why you need it and how to make it.”
A voice over demo is like the bridge that ushers you into the community of voice actors.
What is a Voice Over Demo?
Your voice over demo is like your résumé or your business card. It is a short audio clip that best showcases your voice-acting capabilities. It shows potential clients the qualities you have, and it makes it easier for you to get noticed and hired.
Why do you need a voice over demo?
Well, I’m sure you already know that you don’t get to tell your prospective client “hey man, I’m the guy you’re looking for”. You need to have something that tells them that you’re the pick of the bunch. That thing is your demo.
The competition for roles in the voice-over industry has become tough these days and there’s no gainsaying that there are many great voice actors out there, known and unknown. Clients now need only a few minutes of search before they find what they are looking for. This is more reason why you need a great voice over demo.
How do you make a great voice-over demo?
This is simple. You can start by recording yourself performing a read of a sample script you have written.
Okay, it’s not.
The first thing to do is note the genre you are voicing or the kind of voice over demo you are making. This is because there are several genres and so many aspects of voice acting that it is impossible to jam them all into one demo.
The solution for you is to create several demos that showcase all the aspects of your skills. You can create a different demo for your second language if you are a bilingual voice-over artist. You may also need to create separate demos to specify age or to show that you are capable of showing emotions.
This will give the prospective client the chance to see everything you can do.
Your voice over demo should be collected in one file and sent to prospective clients. However, you should also seek to have your portfolio hosted online.
Another thing of note is the duration of your voice over demo. This depends solely on the genre you are voicing. However, the convention is that a voice over demo should not be less than 30 seconds and it should also not be more than 5 minutes.
The attention span of the average human is very short… I can’t tell you the exact. But then it is even shorter with prospective clients because they are having to skim through a pile of voice over demos. So the first 5-10 seconds of your voice over demo will tell them more about you than the rest of it. A commercial ad should typically last one minute, while an audiobook demo would last up to 5 minutes.
Also, note that the goal is to get them to listen to your voice over demo, and in turn get hired. Present yourself as a professional. Record with the best equipment, if you don’t have your equipment, visit a trusted studio around you to give you the best production.
By the way, we trust Creative Media Recording to give you the best production.
