HOW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS SHAPING THE VOICEOVER INDUSTRY

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most important technologies in our world today. The field of artificial intelligence seeks to advance the science and knowledge of intelligence, with the goal of creating machines with human-like characteristics. Up to 37% of businesses and organizations make use of artificial intelligence and many CEOs believe it will significantly change the way they do business. With the effort being made towards its development by states and companies, AI is believed to hold a large place in how our world functions now and how it will function in the future.

Machines being equipped to act in a human and rational manner will come with significant effects on industries. It has been predicted that the rise of artificial intelligence will eliminate 85 million jobs and create 97 million new ones by 2025. There has been notably accelated progress in the field over the past decade or so. The predicted AI annual growth rate between 2020 and 2027 is 33.2%. This is enabled by the explosion of data, continually increasing computing power,  and new algorithms such as neural networks and deep learning. The convergence of advances in these three areas has created a technological tidal wave.

The voice over industry is no exception to the impact of artificial intelligence. These advancements in technology and artificial intelligence have affected the process of voice over production as well as the relationship and interactions between clients and voice actors. Artificial intelligence has been instrumental in improving voice quality and simplifying the recording process which was previously demanding, complex and prohibitively expensive. AI gives voice actors more freedom with their creativity and makes it easier for clients to find an artist that perfectly suits their needs, thereby bridging the gap between clients and voice actors.

Currently within the voice-over industry, work is being done to develop AI voices that can produce a natural human-like sound unlike the clunky and robotic ones we have now. This is primarily being achieved using deep learning, which involves machines using data – often human-labeled examples- to determine the weight or strength of connection for each link in special kinds of many layered neural networks. Basically, voice developers feed a few hours of audio into an algorithm which then learns those patterns on its own.

The thought of having machines create realistic voice-overs can be seen as threatening to the voice over industry. Would we still have use for voice-over industry if machines can get the job done quickly and efficiently? Would AI voices put voice artists out of work? Will it lead to voice over artists who are no longer employable because their jobs are being done by computers? Or would we have the birth of a new, more advanced industry harnessing the combined abilities of humans and computers?

Artificial intelligence already pervades many parts of our daily lives and the ways in which AI might improve our lives in the future are almost limitless. However, it’s important to seek ways to smooth the transition. Even though artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly,  it is believed that we are still several decades away from the day when computers have complete, human-level artificial intelligence. When looking forward towards the coming future,  it is more promising to view the use of artificial intelligence not as computers replacing people,  but rather as people and computers working together to create solutions and achieve tasks previously beyond the reach of human accomplishment.

The Voice over industry needs to view artificial intelligence in the same light. Computerized voices need a human voice as a foundation for the development of the vocal database. In the future, we would work with these machines to usher in a new and exciting era of revolutionize communication. For now, however, machines are not fully capable of carrying out these tasks with the efficiency and creativity of the human mind. Professional voice-over artists are able to create voice-overs that appeal to your audience’s emotions and thoughts, leaving a deep-rooted impact like no AI presently can.
